Born and bred Bay Area native, Julie Atherton graduated from UC Davis with a degree in art. Julie started working immediately within the fields of marketing and public relations and hasn’t left yet. From The North Face to Old Navy, Julie’s long career in brand development includes a variety of successful and unique companies. Bringing the creative aesthetic of an artist to a finger-on-the-pulse instinct has allowed Julie to work with such innovative and creative clients. If Julie isn’t tearing it up on the soccer field, she might be on her way to yoga, whistling ‘Funkytown’ or making polaroids.
PR Director Julie C, or “the other Julie,” is a native San Franciscan with a breadth of experience in the consumer goods industry – working with Pottery Barn and Donna Karan – as well as within the publishing world. Her knack for organization, keen sense of style and solid sense of humor are key contributions to JAM Media Collective. Julie C. is dedicated to Zumba domination and trying to take every spin class the city can throw at her.
A graduate of the University of Montana’s Journalism School, JAM’s Outdoor PR Director Amy May began her career as a newspaper reporter and magazine writer before transitioning into the field of Public Relations. Her passion, focus and creativity are well-suited to her work with with the leading brands she is proud to represent as part of Team JAM. A Montana-native based out of Bozeman, Amy plans on someday visiting Petra in Jordan. Not only is Amy a year-round runner & iron-pumper, she also loves skiing and sun-worshiping — when either are in season. On top of all that work and play, Amy recently completed her Master’s Degree in Public Relations and continues to impress all of us with her enthusiasm, focus, tenacity and seemingly boundless energy.
JAM’s Director of Digital, Sara provides Social Media strategy, planning, content and reporting for JAM clients including Osprey Packs, Vuarnet and Vasque Footwear. She also develops and executes customized influencer marketing initiatives, brand and media partnerships, paid social media advertising campaigns and ambassador programs. While obtaining her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, Sara honed both her writing and problem-solving abilities and utilizes both skills in managing projects, calendars and collaborators. Deborah Tomecek Pleva
As a non-Julie and Portland, Oregon-based team member, Deborah rounds out the JAM team with experience from brands like Nau, lucy activewear and Portland Farmers Market. She’s often behind the scenes writing press kit materials and product releases. Before settling in Portland, Deb spent five years literally running around the Czech Republic working for the Prague International Marathon and the Czech Olympic Committee. When she’s not working, she’s busy exercising, cooking, practicing yoga, Spanish and Czech (but not at the same time), and meeting the never-ending needs of her two littlest clients – her son and daughter.
July brings 10+ years of diverse experience in the outdoor industry to JAM Collective. She developed an extensive understanding of the industry through working in retail, as a buyer/merchandiser, in wholesale sales, and event management with a focus on environmental and socially responsible apparel brands. Her inherent passion to create, consistently learn and ability to connect people has led her to join the inspired team at JAM Collective. She spent her childhood in Lake Tahoe as a competitive athlete: downhill ski racing and long distance running, while also being naturally drawn to playing the flute and cooking. These days you can find July zooming down the mountains on skis or a mountain bike, running on the trails, swimming, practicing yoga, dancing with friends, or traveling with her husband.
Based in New York City, Janete has over a decade worth of Public Relations and Event Planning experience with a focus on delivering integrated national marketing strategies that incorporate PR, influencer programs, and retail. Most recently, she was the Director of Brands, Marketing and Communications at PMK•BNC, spearheading all public relations, brand partnerships and special event initiatives for numerous clients including Google Play, Cole Haan, Stella Artois, Ketel One Vodka, among others. Her role included establishing and managing the brand narrative, vision and storyline, define targets and key objectives to generate impactful and consistent media coverage.
Whetstone? More like “Backbone!” With her cool, calm demeanor and eye for detail, Karen keeps things at JAM HQ running smoothly. Another Bay Area native and UC Davis graduate at JAM’s Mill Valley HQ, Karen is an avid runner, fierce soccer player and devoted mother of two. Thanks to Karen, JAM HQ gets its dog fix when Bob (the Whetstones’ charming and handsome Border Collie) accompanies Karen to the office.
Amy Hunter is also based in Portland, Oregon and tries not to look at the perfect weather reports for San Francisco, California (JAM’s HQ). A PR veteran, she is experienced in launching products and events, and creating buzz around companies and causes. When not building press lists or writing press releases, she can be found transporting her two boys on her utility bike, working on her downward facing dog or seeking out new singletrack on her mountain bike.
Rian joined JAM Collective after gaining international experience managing PR and Media for Vans and Reef across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She holds a degree in Journalism and Communication from the University of Oregon and spent her formative years as a writer, while snowboarding and skateboarding in the Pacific Northwest. A natural connector, she loves to bring people together in both business and in her personal life.
Prior to joining the JAM team as a social media specialist, Stephanie worked on the ecommerce team at EVO — a leading action sports retailer in the Pacific Northwest. Stephanie is based out of Seattle and has some of the best Instagram Stories featuring all sorts of dogs (@stephwrighttt). Her favorite book is "The Last Season" (about a ranger that goes missing in the Kings Canyon backcountry) and her favorite outdoor place is the North Cascades, of which she says “There’s nothing better."
