“I started Hike Like A Girl because women were constantly reaching out to me about my solo hikes, asking for advice on where to hike and what they should be prepared for,” says Baker. “Only being a novice at hiking, I thought, ‘how about I create a weekend in support of women getting out on the trails for their first solo hike or group hike?’ Thus began, Hike Like A Girl weekend.”
So how does Hike Like A Girl weekend work? It’s simple. On May 4th and 5th, outdoor lovers from around the world are encouraged to participate by dusting off your hiking boots and heading out to your favorite trail, a new mountain you have yet to explore, or roaming around your city’s urban hiking trails. Snap a photo on your hike and post it later to social media with #HikeLAG2019 or #HikeLikeAGirl2019 in the caption and be entered to win prizes from some amazing sponsors, including our friends at Vasque Footwear.
Baker has enjoyed seeing this event flourish in the past few years. “What started off as a way to encourage women and girls, has turned into families hitting the trails, co-workers, men, boys and girls alike, taking advantage of this opportunity to hit the trails in solidarity,” says Baker. “Just hearing from people across the country and even in London, last year, has been super exciting. Stories of how some women never had the courage to solo hike, but through this campaign they were inspired to do so, has shown just how empowering strength in numbers really can be.”
Hike Like A Girl has not only been picked up by hikers across the world, it has also caught the attention of the outdoor industry. Last year Teresa and team won the Outdoor Industry Association’s “Together We Are A Force” Award!
Please join us next weekend, May 4th and 5th, as we grab our friends and family and hit the trails to Hike Like A Girl.
